ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Ed Duncan and I was born in Peterborough Ontario in 1952. I grew up in London and Guelph, Ontario. I enjoyed a very successful high school athletic career but my academic performance was only average. I received a BA in Economics from the University of Guelph where I was on the diving team.

After university I worked for one of the major banks for a couple of years before deciding that the financial world was not for me. I headed west to Calgary, for 3 years, where I drove a truck for a year before getting into the construction industry. I soon discovered that construction suited my temperament quite well. Although I started out on the consulting side, engaged in survey and inspection work, I ended up being lured to the contractor side of things. For the past 19 years I've worked for XXXXXXXX Construction. We do mostly concrete work on bridges and other structures like tunnels, retaining walls, TTC stations and other buildings. I am usually involved in managing mid-sized projects. After 3 years in Calgary, I moved back to Ontario and married my high school sweetheart. Kathy and I have 3 wonderful daughters, Lindsay, Amy and Kaylee. Aside from family and job, I always seem to be obsessed with something or other. At first it was rebuilding the older Toronto home that Kathy and I bought when we were first married. When that was done, I turned to running. That phase lasted for a several years but nagging injuries put an end to the running. The most creative thing that I've obsessed over was designing and building a 2 story cottage on our lot at Stony Lake. With a little help from my dad and other family members I built the whole thing from bedrock to the ridge board (except for taping the drywall). It took a majority of my weekends and holidays for 5 years.

My most recent obsession is, of course, inline skating. I suppose this web site is just an extension of that obsession, although I am learning some neat stuff about computers at the same time (I think I have started dreaming in html code).
